First snowfall leads to multiple crashes in Middlesex

If the first snowfall of the season is any indication, motorists need to better adjust their driving habits for winter weather.

Middlesex OPP were called to a single-vehicle crash on Elginfield Road in Lucan-Biddulph just before 7 a.m. on Sunday. It came as the region was under a winter weather travel advisory with up to 12 cm of snow forecast to fall throughout the day.

In the six hours that followed that collision, emergency crews were sent to 25 additional crashes throughout the county. Snow and icy conditions were a factor in all the collisions.

"As the snow falls, driver's need to switch their mindset from summer driving to winter driving," OPP said on Monday. "The most important advice is to drop your speeds significantly and drive according to the road conditions. Leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you, in the event you are required to brake suddenly."

Police also recommended those venturing out in winter weather to invest in snow tires and leave extra time to get to their destination.

Fortunately, none of the collisions reported Sunday resulted in serious injury, police said.

Environment Canada is calling for a chance of flurries each day this week with the temperature unlikely to rise higher than a few degrees above the freezing mark. However no significant accumulation is anticipated.
