Police in St. Thomas are warning business owners and city residents to be on the lookout for a man they describe as a "prolific" property crime offender.
Kevin George Ashford, 42, of no fixed address, has been released from custody, St. Thomas Police Chief Chris Herridge said in a notice of release issued on Friday.
Since 2019, Ashford has been charged with 137 offences relating to breaking and entering, possession of stolen property, theft, and breach of release conditions. Another 15 charges against him are pending.
While many of the criminal charges against Ashford have been withdrawn by the courts, Herridge said his presence in the community creates a substantial concern for property crime offences to occur.
"He demonstrates no respect for the courts or justice system and blatantly disregards the conditions imposed," said Herridge. "We are asking our community to contact St. Thomas Police Service if Ashford is observed breaking the law, as we will respond to bring this repeat offender back before the courts."
The chief added that without adequate consequences or compulsory pathways to rehabilitation programs the well being of the community is at risk, forcing him to issue the notice of release.
"It is my responsibility to ensure that I do what I can within the parameters of the law to keep our community safe," said Herridge. "It truly is a challenge balancing the needs of the victim and supporting the vulnerable, and police officers are often caught in the middle. As stated in the Police Services Act, crime prevention is a core function of policing."
