Three hurt in apartment fire in southeast London

Three people have been taken to hospital after a fire broke out at an apartment building in southeast London.

Firefighters were called to the three-storey walk-up at 88 King Edward Ave., northeast of Adelaide Street and Thompson Road just after 10 p.m. Monday.

The building was evacuated and London Transit buses brought in to shelter the roughly two dozen displaced tenants while fire crews worked to contain the blaze.

The extent of the injuries of the three people sent to hospital are not known. Damage is estimated at $200,000.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

"We don't believe [the fire] to be suspicious," said Platoon Chief Gary Mosburger. "There are other things we are looking at at this point just to make sure we are covering off all of the factors within the investigation process."

It is unclear when displaced tenants will be allowed to return to the building.

"With the support of Red Cross and the City of London, we did open our reception centre. We transported 11 individuals from the scene to the reception centre on Jalna Boulevard and they stayed the one night there," said Mosburger. "Since then we have arranged for hotels in the short-term to get them through the next couple of days."
