London mayoral, council races locked in

Londoners now know the names they'll see on the ballot when they head to the polls this fall.

The nomination deadline for the 2022 municipal election passed on Friday afternoon, with 61 candidates vying for 14 council seats - while 10 people hope to become the city's next Mayor.

That's slightly down from the 2018 campaign, which included 66 council candidates and 14 people on the mayoral ballot.

Incumbents are running in nine of the 14 wards.

On Friday, the Craig Needles Podcast examined each of the races - which will be decided on October 24th.

All of the candidates in each race are listed below.

Mayor

Candidates: Brandon Ellis, Daniel Jeffrey, Daniel Lenart, Norman Miles, Josh Morgan, Carlos Murray, Johanne Nichols, Sean O'Connell, Sandie Thomas, Khalil Ramal

Notes: Morgan, London's current Deputy Mayor and a two-term councillor, is considered to be the favourite in the race. He's been endorsed by current mayor Ed Holder. Ramal represented London-Fanshawe as MPP from 2003-2011. Thomas, who registered on the final day of nominations, is a well-known local pastor.

Ward 1

Candidates: Ryan Cadden, Janette Cameron, Ken Fischer, Oberon Goodden, Hadleigh McAlister, Julie Reynolds, Kenneth Saunders, Michael van Holst (incumbent), Shirley Wilton

Notes: van Holst is the ward's controversial incumbent, he was found to have breached the council code of conduct by the city's integrity commissioner. However, his colleagues did not vote to censure him. He faces the largest field of challengers in the city.

Ward 2

Candidates: Shawn Lewis (incumbent), Mike Yohnicki

Notes: Lewis knocked off long-time councillor Bill Armstrong four years ago. Yohnicki, his only challenger, registered during the final week of nominations.

Ward 3

Candidates: Peter Cuddy, Prabh Gill, Ainsley Graham, Saifullah Qasimi, Bob Wright

Notes: Two-term councillor Mo Salih announced last year he wouldn't seek re-election. Cuddy currently serves on the Thames Valley District School Board.

Ward 4

Candidates: Raymond Daamen, Jarad Fisher, Colleen Murphy, Sylvia Nagy, Matt Nicolaidis, Stephen Orser, Susan Stevenson

Notes: He's back. Orser, the controversial former councillor who represented the ward from 2006-2014 is on the ballot for the fifth consecutive election. However, this time he won't be facing Jesse Helmer, who beat him in 2014 and 2018. Helmer announced last year he won't seek re-election. Daamen, Fisher, Murphy and Nagy all registered in the final two weeks of the nomination period.

Ward 5

Candidates: Connor Pierotti, Jerry Pribil

Notes: Maureen Cassidy, who represented the ward for the last eight years, announced on Friday she won't be seeking re-election. Pribil ran for the Progressive Conservatives in London North-Centre in June's provincial election, finishing second to Terence Kernaghan.

Ward 6

Candidates: Mariam Hamou (incumbent), Sam Trosow, Becky Williamson

Notes: Hamou was appointed to the role after Phil Squire resigned to take a provincial appointment in October of 2021. She is the first Muslim woman to serve on London City Council. Trosow is a professor at Western University.

Ward 7

Candidates: Thomas Caldwell, Sharon Deebrah, Corrine Rahman, Evan Wee

Notes: Rahman was elected to the Thames Valley District School Board in 2018, and previously worked at the City of London as chief of staff for Mayor Matt Brown. Caldwell ran for the New Blue Party of Ontario in the provincial election in June.

Ward 8

Candidates: Sarvarinder Dohil, Steve Lehman (incumbent), Colleen McCauley, Patrick O'Connor

Notes: Lehman was first elected to the seat four years ago, following the political retirement of longtime councillor Paul Hubert. McCauley was the London West Green Party candidate in June's provincial election. Dohil started the Guru Nanak Mission Society of London.

Ward 9

Candidates: Anna Hopkins (incumbent), Baqar Khan, Jacob Novick, Veronica Warner, Mario Jozic

Notes: Hopkins has represented the ward since 2014 - easily winning re-election four years ago.

Ward 10

Candidates: Claire Grant, John Kuypers, Kevin May, Mike McMullen, Paul Van Meerbergen (incumbent)

Notes: Van Meerbergen is wrapping up his fourth term at London City Hall - but they haven't been consecutive. He lost a re-election bid in 2014 to challenger Virginia Ridley, and then managed to beat her in 2018. McMullen ran for the People's Party of Canada in London West both in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections. May finished third behind Van Meerbergen and Ridley in 2018.

Ward 11

Candidates: Paul-Micheal Anderson, Cole Fobert, Skylar Franke, Jeremy McCall, Christine Oliver

Notes: Stephen Turner has represented the ward for eight years. He isn't running for re-election, instead endorsing Franke, who is the President of the Urban League. McCall is a well-known volunteer in the community and the founder of Dad Club London.

Ward 12

Candidates: David Godwin, Alex Main, Elizabeth Peloza (incumbent)

Notes: Peloza served as the city's budget chair the last two years, her name was on 3,403 ballots in 2018. Main ran for Mayor in 2014, receiving 84 votes.

Ward 13

Candidates: David Ferriera, John Fyfe-Millar (incumbent), Alexandria Hames, David Millie

Notes: Fyfe-Millar was appointed to the seat in the fall of 2021 after Arielle Kayabaga became the Member of Parliament for London West. Millie ran for Mayor in 2018, finishing 7th.

Ward 14

Candidates: Steve Hillier (incumbent), Sarah Lehman, Danalynn Williams

Notes: Hiller was elected in 2018 after defeating incumbent Jared Zaifman. He admitted to asking Williams, who was the only candidate in the race at the time, to withdraw her nomination.  Lehman registered in the final week of the nomination period.
