Cyclist killed on Highway 401 near London

Provincial police are investigating after a cyclist was fatally struck on Highway 401 near London.

Emergency crews were called about a serious crash in the eastbound lanes at Colonel Talbot Road just after 5:15 a.m. on Thursday.

A preliminary investigation by Middlesex OPP found a cyclist was hit by a passing vehicle. That individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are not releasing the name of the deceased until family are notified.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the cyclist was arrested without incident at an undisclosed location, police said.

One eastbound lane of the highway and the southbound exit ramp to Colonel Talbot were closed while the OPP traffic incident management and enforcement team investigated. That prompted OPP to ask drivers travelling through the area to slow down and be patient. All lanes and the ramp were reopened just before 1:30 p.m.

Cycling on controlled-access highways in Ontario is prohibited under the Highway Traffic Act.
