There was a nearly 15 per cent decrease in the number of patients with COVID-19 at the London Health Sciences Centre on Wednesday.
The hospital reported on Wednesday that it has 46 patients with the virus, down from 54 on Tuesday. Of the 46 patients, 22 are in hospital because of COVID-19, while 24 were admitted for other reasons but have tested positive. The LHSC says five or fewer of the patients are in intensive care.
There are two ongoing outbreaks at the LHSC – one on Victoria Hospital’s C6-300 sub-acute medicine unit, the other on University Hospital’s U4 medicine 100 and low 200 wing.
There are 167 staff members at the hospital who are currently positive for COVID-19, an increase of nine from Tuesday.
There were 82 new COVID-19 cases reported Wednesday by the Middlesex London Health Unit, double what was reported Tuesday. However, daily case tallies have been considered an underestimate of community spread because of limits placed on testing eligibility at the end of last year.
No deaths were reported Wednesday, leaving the area's pandemic death toll at 377.
There was a slight decrease in the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations reported by the province on Wednesday. Figures show 1,698 patients with the virus, one fewer than Tuesday. There are 199 COVID-19 patients in intensive care, down by three from the day before.
One week ago, there were 1,734 patients with COVID-19, 211 of them in intensive care.
Of the 1,698 currently in hospital, 57 per cent were admitted for reasons other than the virus, but they tested positive while in hospital.
Another 31 virus-related deaths were reported Wednesday to bring the provincial death toll to 12,889. The province noted that two of the deaths reported Wednesday occured more than a month ago.
