Candidates can begin filing municipal election nominations Monday

Londoners with their sights set on holding municipal office can officially throw their hats in the ring on Monday.

The Elections Office on the second floor of London City Hall will begin accepting nomination papers for candidates for this fall's municipal vote as of 8:30 a.m. Anyone interested in running for mayor, city councillor or school board trustee is required to file the papers in-person as there is no online option.

In addition to paying a filing fee, mayoral and councillor hopefuls also have to submit a form with the signatures of eligible voters who support their nomination before the nomination will be accepted. Once that has been completed, candidates can begin campaigning.

The deadline to file nomination papers for the October 24 municipal vote is 2 p.m. on August 19.

Monday is also the first day third party advertisers can register with the city clerk. Any person, corporation or trade union intending to spend money on advertisements for the election that support, promote or oppose a candidate are required to register.

The City of London will post an updated list of candidates for the municipal election on its website.
