37 new COVID-19 cases, 0 deaths in London region

For the sixth straight day, the number of new COVID-19 cases in the London region was above 30.

The Middlesex London Health Unit logged 37 new infections on Wednesday, up from 33 on Tuesday. Daily case numbers in London and Middlesex County have exceeded 30 everyday since last Friday. Prior to this, single-day cases had predominantly been in the teens to low 20s for three weeks.

The total number of cases locally since the pandemic began sits at 15,160.

There were no additional COVID-19 related deaths in the region, leaving the death toll unchanged at 254.

Resolved cases are up by 22 to 14,617. There are currently 289 active cases locally, up from 275 the previous day.

Hospitalizations in the area are down by two with 12 COVID-19 patients in the care of the London Health Sciences Centre. Of those, five or fewer are listed in intensive care and five or fewer are in Children’s Hospital. There are seven hospital employees who have tested positive for the virus.

There are eight schools locally that are dealing with outbreaks - Mountsfield Public, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic, Riverside Public, St. Jude Catholic, St. Marguerite, St. Mary Choir and Orchestra, Tecumseh Public, and West Oaks French Immersion, which reported three more cases Wednesday for a total of seven. The outbreak at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Elementary has been deemed over.

Of the 674 new cases logged over the past six weeks, 47.3 per cent are among people who are either not vaccinated, not fully vaccinated or had the shot but it had not yet begun offering protection. The remaining 52.7 per cent were among those who had received both doses of the vaccine.

Southwestern Public Health reported 20 more COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, increasing the local case count since the pandemic began to 5,579. Two more deaths linked to the virus were recorded, bringing the death toll up to 105. Resolved cases rose to 5,275. There are now 199 active cases in the two counties. Caressant Care On Bonnie Place in St. Thomas is the only local seniors' facility dealing with an outbreak. There are also outbreaks at four area schools – Southridge Public and St. Joseph’s Catholic in Tillsonburg, Woodstock Christian School, and Immanuel Christian School in Aylmer.

Ontario saw single-day COVID-19 case numbers shoot back above 1,000 on Wednesday.

A total of 1,009 new infections were confirmed over the past 24 hours, up from Tuesday’s 928 and Monday's 887. The seven-day average caseload is now 1,007, up from 821 a week ago.

Of the latest 780 new cases, 421 were among unvaccinated people, 22 involved partially vaccinated people, 502 were fully vaccinated individuals, and 64 had unknown vaccination status.

Ontario’s total case count since the start of the pandemic now sits at 626,321.

According to public health officials, there were eight additional deaths related to the virus recorded Wednesday. The official death toll now stands at 10,044.

Hospitalizations in the province stand at 333 COVID-19 positive patients. That’s down seven patients from the previous day. There are 155 people in intensive care, a decrease of ten since Tuesday, and the number of people on a ventilator is down by nine to 135.

The latest figures from the Ministry of Health shows of the patients with COVID-19 on general hospital wards, 99 were unvaccinated, 22 have had one dose, and 75 were fully vaccinated. Of those in the ICU, 84 are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated and 24 have received both doses.

Resolved cases across the province are up by 1,129 to 607,926. That leaves 8,351 known active cases of the virus in Ontario.

In the last 24 hour period, 38,502 COVID-19 tests were processed, up from 26,136 the previous day. Ontario’s positivity rate is now 3.3 per cent.

The province has administered 24,150,789 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine as of Tuesday night. There are 11.3 million people in Ontario who have received both doses of the vaccine and are considered fully inoculated.
