Tillsonburg furniture store destroyed by fire

A family-owned furniture store that has been a fixture in Tillsonburg for decades has been destroyed by fire.

Emergency crews were called to Morrice Furniture at 97 Simcoe Street just after 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Flames and thick smoke had engulfed the building by the time firefighters arrived.

One person was assessed by paramedics at the scene, Oxford OPP tweeted.

No other injuries were reported.

An official damage estimate has not been released but the building is believed to be a total loss.

"We will be closed for not sure how long. We had a devastating fire and the building is no longer. Everyone is safe," a post on the Morrice Furniture Facebook page read.

Described as a fixture of the town, the furniture store had been in business for 73 years.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
