Onions recalled over possible salmonella contamination

A possible salmonella contamination has prompted a recall by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) of some red, white, and yellow raw onions.

The onions, exported by Prosource Produce LLC of Hailey, Idaho, were sold in Ontario, Quebec, and possibly other provinces and territories between July 1 and August 31.

Imported from the state of Chihuahua in Mexico, the onions were marketed under multiple names including Big Bull, Peak Fresh Produce, Sierra Madre Produce, Markon First Crop, Markon Essentials, RioBlue, ProSource, Rio Valley, and Imperial Fresh. They came in both mesh sacks and cartons in sizes ranging from 2 lbs to 50 lbs.

Anyone who has the onions is being told to either toss them into the garbage or return them to the place of purchase.

The CFIA is now conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.

Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick, according to the CFIA. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.

So far, no one has reported getting sick from the recalled onions.
