Woman who refused to show proof of vaccination at Aylmer arena charged

Charges have been laid against a 53-year-old woman who police have said was removed from an arena in Aylmer after refusing to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Aylmer police were called to the East Elgin Community Complex around 3 p.m. last Thursday for the allegedly uncooperative hockey parent.

Staff had asked the woman to leave the facility after she refused to provide the required proof of vaccination or medical exemption. Police initially tried to educate the woman by explaining the consequences of not leaving the premises as requested by staff.

The woman still did not leave the arena and was ultimately removed by officers. She is charged with obstructing a peace officer and failure to leave a premise when directed. She is scheduled to appear in St. Thomas court at a later date.

Figures from Southwestern Public Health indicate  Aylmer currently has 14 active infections of COVID-19, the highest active case count of the municipalities covered by that health unit.
