Caution adivsed near waterways due to steady rainfall

As a system capable of dumping upwards of 40 millimetres of rain moves through the area, the local conservation authority is reminding residents to be careful near waterways.

Officials with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) said streams and rivers in London and the surrounding area are expected to rise due to the wet weather which prompted Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement on Thursday.

Forecasts are calling for rainfall amounts between 25-50 mm locally by Sunday as the system capable of producing thunderstorms passes over the region. The UTRCA said while it does not expect there to be serious flooding, streams may start to overflow.

"Stream banks can be slippery and unstable and the water may quickly become fast-moving and higher than normal. Parents are reminded to keep children and pets away from watercourses and any standing water," read a release from the UTRCA.

The UTRCA added it will be operate flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood and Pittock conservation areas to reduce any downstream flooding if needed. Additional changes will be made if conditions worsen.
