London police launch vaccination policy

Employees of the London Police Service will have to get vaccinated against COVID-19 or face the possibility of losing their job.

The LPS launched its vaccination policy on Tuesday.

The two phase plan states that all LPS employees have until October 15 to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Those who have an exemption under the Human Rights Code will have to submit a request for accommodation and provide supporting documentation.

The second phase says that those who do not have an exemption and do not provide proof of vaccination will have to take part in COVID-19 education sessions. They could also be subject to additional measures, which could include reassignment, removal from active duty, being placed on an unpaid leave of absence, or face other disciplinary action that could include termination.

“The health and safety of LPS employees, as well as all members of our community, is paramount,” said Police Chief Steve Williams. “We support doing everything that we can to ensure that safety, including requiring members to provide verification of full vaccination.”

According to police, the policy was based on advice and recommendations with public health officials and in consultation with the London Police Association and the London Police Services Board.
