Singh rallies London supporters, promises to go after super wealthy with "unlimited zeal"

With five days of campaigning left, Jagmeet Singh rallied supporters in an effort to turn London West orange.

The NDP leader was in the Forest City on Wednesday, surrounded by more than 100 NDP supporters at a restaurant in Wortley Village, to support London West candidate Shawna Lewkowitz and other local NDP nominees.

"We will go after the super wealthy with unlimited zeal to make them pay their fair share," Singh said in response to comments from Liberal leader Justin Trudeau earlier in the campaign. "We are going to fight for (NDP plans) with everything we have."

Singh was flanked by Lewkowitz, London-Fanshawe NDP incumbent Lindsay Mathyssen, London North Centre candidate Dirka Prout, Chief Jason Henry, the party's candidate from Lambton-Kent Middlesex and Oxford candidate Matthew Chambers.

"People are telling us they truly believe we can do better (than Justin Trudeau)," Singh said. "There is a cost to voting for Liberals. There is a cost when Justin Trudeau tells Indigenous people he's going to clean drinking water and he breaks that promise. We've seen the national average housing cost go up since he took office in 2015, by $300,000. Here in London we know the price of housing has gone up astronomically."

Singh did not take questions from reporters.

Earlier in the day, NDP candidates in Toronto and Nova Scotia ended their campaigns due to past anti-Semitic social media posts.

Lewkowitz is running in a riding without an incumbent. Two term Liberal MP Kate Young announced in March she wouldn't be seeking re-election. London city councillor Arielle Kayabaga is vying to replace Young, but lost her campaign manager earlier this month.

Conservative Rob Flack, Mike McMullen of the PPC, and Libertarian Jacques Boudreau are the other candidates in London West.
