16 new COVID-19 cases in London, Middlesex

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported 16 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday.

The new cases bring the total since the start of the pandemic to 12,837. The number of active cases climbed to 58 after having fallen to 52 on Thursday.

Once again, there were no deaths reported Friday. The last COVID-19 deaths reported in London and Middlesex County were on Friday, when the health unit reported the deaths of a man in his 50s and a man in his 60s. The health unit says neither had received a dose of vaccine.

The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) has eight COVID-19 inpatients in its care. Of those, fewer than five are listed in intensive care. Currently, fewer than five hospital staff have tested positive for the virus. An outbreak remains at Victoria Hospital’s adult inpatient mental health unit, but no new cases have been associated with it.

The number of cases involving variants of concern identified in the area is at 3,637. There have been 3,382 confirmed cases involving the B.1.1.7 (Alpha) variant that originated in the U.K., 129 cases of the Delta variant that was first found in India, 120 cases of the P.1 (Gamma) variant from Brazil, and two cases of the B.1.351 (Beta) variant from South Africa.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, there were five new COVID-19 cases reported Friday. Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for the region, said that brings the local total number of cases to 3,980 with 3,860 resolved. The death toll was unchanged at 84. Currently, there are 36 active cases in the two counties.

Across Ontario, another 340 cases were reported Wednesday.

There are 114 people with COVID-19 being treated in Ontario hospitals.

To date, the province has administered 19,764,199 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, with 9,231,765 people having received both shots required to be fully inoculated.
