29 new COVID-19 cases reported over weekend

The London region saw another 29 new cases of COVID-19 over the holiday weekend, but no new cases were reported on Tuesday.

The Middlesex London Health Unit, which no longer releases new case counts on weekends, said Tuesday that there were 12 new cases reported Saturday, 11 on Sunday, and six on the holiday Monday. The daily report, which comes out at noon on weekdays, showed zero new cases on Tuesday.

The total number of cases in London and Middlesex County since the start of the pandemic now sits at 12,806. Currently, there are 63 active cases in the community.

No deaths were reported Tuesday. The last COVID-19 deaths reported in London and Middlesex County were on Friday, when the health unit reported the deaths of a man in his 50s and a man in his 60s. The health unit says neither had received a dose of vaccine.

The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) has eight COVID-19 inpatients in its care. Of those, fewer than five are listed in intensive care. Currently, fewer than five hospital staff have tested positive for the virus. An outbreak remains at Victoria Hospital’s adult inpatient mental health unit, but no new cases have been associated with it.

The number of cases involving variants of concern identified in the area is up to 3,621. There have been 3,380 cases involving the B.1.1.7 (Alpha) variant that originated in the U.K., 116 cases of the P.1 (Gamma) variant from Brazil, two cases of the B.1.351 (Beta) variant from South Africa, and 110 cases of the B.1.617 (Delta) variant, originally found in India.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, there were 13 new COVID-19 cases reported Tuesday. Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for the region, said that brings the local total number of cases to 3,963 with 3,848 resolved. The death toll was unchanged at 84. Currently, there are 20 active cases in the two counties.

Across Ontario, another 332 new cases were reported Tuesday. Health Minister Christine Elliott said there were 168 reported Monday and 164 reported Tuesday. There were two deaths reported Tuesday.

There are 71 people with COVID-19 being treated in Ontario hospitals.

To date, the province has administered 19,591,917 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, with nearly 9 million people having received both shots required to be fully inoculated.
