Man shot after allegedly running at police officers with knives

A man is in hospital after a shooting involving a London police officer downtown on Tuesday night.

Police were called about a man armed with knives at an apartment on Dufferin Avenue just east of Waterloo Street around 10:30 p.m.

The man is alleged to have run at officers with knives in both of his hands. Two officers attempted to use less lethal force by firing tasers to try to stop the man, but were not successful.

An officer then fired his gun at the man, who suffered serious, non life threatening injuries. He was taken to Victoria Hospital for treatment.

Dufferin between Waterloo and Colborne streets remained taped off on Wednesday morning. Half a dozen police vehicles were on scene and officers could be seen flying a drone over the area.  A neighbour told reporters she did not hear the commotion and was unware of the large police presence outside her door until her daughter called her.

The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified about the incident and invoked its mandate. It has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the SIU lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 and anyone with video evidence can upload it through the SIU website.
