London swimmer claims Canada's first Olympic gold

Canada’s first gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics went to a Londoner.

Maggie Mac Neil took first place in the 100-metre butterfly Monday with a 55.59-second swim - the third-fastest time ever recorded in the sport at the Olympics. She finished just 0.05 of a second ahead of the competition.

China’s Zhang Yufei and Australia’s Emma McKeon took silver and bronze in the race.

In addition to being Canada's first gold medalist, Mac Neil is also the country's first multi-medallist of the Tokyo Games.

The 21-year-old claimed a silver medal about 24 hours earlier in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay with Penny Oleksiak, Kayla Sanchez, and Rebecca Smith.

More than 200 members of the London Aquatic Club watched Mac Neil’s gold medal win from in their vehicles at the Oxford Drive-In.

Mac Neil is scheduled to speak to the media Monday morning from the Olympic Village.
