Motorcyclist seriously injured in crash near Sparta

A two-vehicle crash in Central Elgin has sent a motorcyclist to hospital with critical injuries.

Shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday, provincial police in Elgin County along with emergency crews responded to a crash at the intersection of Roberts Line and Quaker Road just south of Sparta.

According to police, a motorcyclist and a van collided and the driver of the motorcycle was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The occupants in the van are reported to have sustained minor injuries.

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police Technical Traffic Collision Investigators unit closed the intersection to traffic for several hours to survey the scene before it was cleared.

During the road closure, traffic was re-directed at Sparta Line, Jamestown Line, Yarmouth Center Road and Dexter Line until approximately 6:30 p.m. when the roads re-opened.

No other details on the incident have been provided by police.
