Charges laid in fatal fire pit incident

A tragic backyard fire pit incident that claimed the life of a one-year-old child has led to charges.

The young daughter of 33-year-old Jake Hiebert and 28-year-old Tina Hiebert died on July 15, three days after being rushed to hospital with serious burns suffered in the incident. Jake and Tina Hiebert, along with two of their other four children were injured in the bonfire mishap at a home on Vienna Line in Port Burwell on Monday, July 12.

A seven-year-old girl, a four-year-old boy, and the one-year-old girl were rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the two adults suffered serious injuries.

On Friday, Elgin OPP announced that Johan Hiebert, 55, of the Municipality of Bayham has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and four counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

He is to appear in court on September 7, 2021.
