Health Unit offering school-based vaccination pop-up clinics

Ten schools in London and Middlesex County will host pop-up vaccine clinics, as the Middlesex-London Health Unit continues its push to get people vaccinated.

The clinics will each last one day, and run between 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. They'll run over a two week period starting after June 21.

“We know that there are still people in the community who have not been able to book a vaccination appointment or who aren’t able to get to one of our vaccination clinics, but who still very much want to receive the vaccine. These clinics are for them,” says Dr. Alex Summers, Associate Medical Officer of Health at the Middlesex-London Health Unit. “We are grateful to our school board partners for allowing us to use their facilities and we look forward to getting more vaccine in arms through the next few weeks.”

At this time, the Health Unit isn't providing the public a list of schools that will have a vaccination clinic.

"We're providing it first to the families in those schools, and that's really because the clinics are targeted at those populations where we know COVID rates have been high and/or the vaccination rates have been low," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Chris Mackie. "Right now, the prioritization around these schools is very much data driven."

Mackie said the list will be provided eventually, once members of the school community have been made aware.

The Health Unit is expecting shipments of 17,000 Moderna vaccines this week and next.

Also, Mackie says at least 70% of people aged 12 and older in the community have had at least one dose of the vaccine. He added 8.3% of people in the same age group have had two doses.

There were 13 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the area on Thursday.
