Health unit issues heat warning ahead of hot weekend

If you're heading outside this weekend, don't forget your water and your sunscreen.

The Middlesex-London Health has issued the third heat warning of 2021, as forecasts call for temperatures to move above the 30 degree mark on Saturday and Sunday.

A cool down is expected on Monday, with rain in the forecast.

“The high UV index that we’re expecting to accompany these hot and sunny conditions will bring challenges of its own that people need to be aware of,” said Randy Walker, Public Health Inspector with the Middlesex-London Health Unit. “It will not only be key to stay hydrated and take breaks from the sun, it will also be very important to cover exposed skin with light, loose- fitting clothes, and to use sunblock with an SPF of at least 30 to protect exposed skin.”

Heat alerts are issued when forecasts call for temperatures of 31 degrees or higher and lows of at least 20 degrees for two consecutive days.

The Health Unit recommends staying hydrated, wearing hats, and avoiding intense physical activity if you're heading outside. A full list of recommendations can be found on their website.

Despite the high temperatures, health officials are asking people in the community to continue following COVID-19 protocols, including wearing masks where necessary.
