Fanshawe to require vaccination to live in residence

Fanshawe College has announced it will also require students living in residence to have had at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

The college made the announcement Thursday, joining Western University in requiring any student that lives in an on-campus residence to have had one shot.

"Providing an enriched residence living experience is a top priority for the Fanshawe Residence experience this fall, and that requires measures to protect ourselves and our student community to the fullest extent we can," said Director of Resident Operations David Norwood. "Health officials have told us that vaccines are the best way to provide an environment for that to happen."

The college said if a student can't get a vaccine in their home community, it will help in scheduling an appointment. It added that students living in residence, if they have not already received a dose, will be expected to get one within the first 14 days of arriving at residence.

"Students who cannot be vaccinated due to medical accommodations or other protected grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code may request an exemption," the college said in a news release issued Thursday. "Residence Staff will communicate with students about the outcomes of exemption requests and options available. Approved exemptions may impose restrictions on access, activities or room occupancy."

While the college will require proof of vaccination to live in residence, it will not require it for coming onto campus for in-person labs, classes, or services. But it does "strongly encourage" everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
