More charges expected after Aylmer church holds large outdoor service

The Church of God in Aylmer opted for a large outdoor gathering after Superior Court Justice Bruce Thomas ordered the doors to the church be locked last Friday.

During a livestream of the service on Sunday, pastor Henry Hildebrandt spoke to more than 400 churchgoers outside of the locked-up John Street church.

"I am not locked down this morning," Hildebrandt said. "So far, there has been no invention of locks that lock God down or his people."

Under the current provincial lockdown restrictions, both indoor and outdoor religious services are limited to 10 people with physical distancing measures in place.

Over the last several weeks, upwards of 200 people were seen entering the church for Sunday service.

On top of the recent order to lock the doors, the church and two pastors were hit with $117,000 in fines and legal fees.

Aylmer police obtained footage of Sunday's large gathering and the makeshift outdoor church stage and seating area set up for the service. Additional charges against the church, organizers of the service and active participants are pending, police said on Monday morning.

"Aylmer Police will actively pursue further options to ensure compliance with emergency orders of this particular church and participants in order to protect the community from harm," Police Chief Zvonko Horvat said in a statement.
