47 new COVID-19 cases recorded in London region

Daily COVID-19 case counts in the London area continue to hold steady in the double-digits.

On Sunday, the Middlesex-London Health Unit reported 47 new cases.

This marks a week straight of daily-digit case counts in the region, after multiple weeks of triple-digit increases.

The region’s total case count is now at 11,596 with 713 known active cases, down from 755 the previous day.

No new deaths were reported in the region on Sunday, with the local death toll remaining at 212.

Another 83 variant infections were identified for a total of 2,538. Of those, 2,512 are the B.1.1.7 strain that originated in the U.K., 25 are the P.1 variant from Brazil and one is the B.1.617 variant, originally found in India. There are 298 cases confirmed with a mutation-positive sample.

There were no changes to the number of outbreaks locally over the past 24 hours. Outbreaks are ongoing at four area seniors’ facilities – Dearness Home, Kensington Village, Kensington Village Retirement, and McGarrell Place. There is also an outbreak at a local child care centre.

In Ontario, provincial health officials logged 2,199 additional cases of the virus on Sunday along with 30 more deaths. The total number of cases in the province is now at 509,316 with 474,175 recoveries and 8,485 deaths.

On Saturday evening, Ontario hit a vaccine milestone with more than 7 million doses administered throughout the province.
