Health unit declares COVID-19 outbreak linked to funeral service

Health officials say they're investigating a COVID-19 outbreak after upwards of 300 people attended a funeral service earlier this month.

The Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU) is reporting that so far, 14 people have tested positive for the virus as of Friday afternoon. The affected individuals have been linked to a funeral and visitation that took place on May 5 and 6.

Investigators say they have found evidence that suggests transmission likely occurred at private home gatherings, the visitation, and the funeral.

Between 180 and 300 people attended a visitation held last Wednesday at Needham Funeral Home, a funeral service at Holy Cross Santa Cruz Catholic Church last Thursday, and burial later that day at Woodland Cemetery.

"While the Health Unit has been able to advise several people associated with the funeral of their exposure directly, investigators do not have a way to reach most of those who were in attendance," a release from the MLHU read. "Anyone who attended these gatherings is considered a high-risk contact and is advised to quarantine immediately."

Public health officials are advising anyone associated with the funeral to get tested at one of London's two COVID-19 assessment centres located at the Oakridge Arena and the Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre.

The region's Medical Officer of Health says that while the pandemic has made it difficult for people to observe important life events, it's important to stay the course.

"This outbreak is showing once again how important it is to continue following public health guidance," Dr. Chris Mackie said. "We ask that people continue to wear a mask or face covering, maintain a physical distance of six feet from others, and please do not gather in groups or with people who are not part of your household."
