City to spray local parks for gypsy moths

The City of London has announced plans to spray five local parks, to control the gypsy moth infestation.

Weather permitting, aerial spraying will begin the week of May 10 through May 31 at Fairmont Park, Grand View Park, Griffith Street Park, Crestwood Woods and Somerset Woods.

Over 34 acres of land will be sprayed with Foray 48B Biological Insecticide Aqueous Suspension.

Residents who live next to the municipal parks being sprayed will be notified within 48 hours of the scheduled treatment.

The city says it has been monitoring the gypsy moth problem for several years as part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program.

Gypsy moths are an invasive species native to Europe, the larvae cause damage to trees by chewing holes or devouring entire leaves. Infestations can lead to the defoliation of trees and shrubs causing significant loss of growth.

More information on spray dates and the program can be found on the City of London website.
