Man charged after hatchet swung at store employee

A London man faces charges after police allege he stole items from a store and swung a hatchet at an employee who tried to stop him.

Police were called to a store at 1925 Dundas Street where, according to police, a man walked in around 7:45 p.m. Friday and put several items in a basket. He walked around the store for about an hour before leaving without paying for the items.

An employee of the store approached the man and there was a phsyical altercation. The man then allegedly swung a hatchet at the employee and damaged some property before running away. Police say about $1,000 in damage was done to the store.

Police say a suspect was arrested at about 8:45 p.m.

A hatchet was seized. There were no reported injuries.

A 33-year-old man is charged with robbery, mischief under $5,000, and failing to comply with a release order.
