UPDATE: Ford backtracks on playground closures, police measures

Certain measures have been amended just one day after the Ontario government announced stricter COVID-19 protocols.

On Saturday, Premier Doug Ford tweeted that playgrounds would be allowed to reopen.

"Ontario’s enhanced restrictions were always intended to stop large gatherings where spread can happen," said Ford on Twitter Saturday. "Our regulations will be amended to allow playgrounds but gatherings outside will still be enforced. Play outside safely. Parents keep your distance and wear masks if you can’t."

The government's decision to close all outdoor recreation areas, including playgrounds was met with furious criticism after the regulations were announced Friday.

Additionally, many police boards, including those in London, Windsor, Sarnia and St. Thomas have said they won’t be randomly stopping people after being given temporary authority by the Ontario government to enforce the stay-at-home order.

On Saturday evening, the Ontario government amended their COVID-19 measure that allowed police to make random checks.

The revised policy now reads that people will be required to provide information to police regarding why they're not at home only if an officer has reason to suspect "that an individual may be participating in a gathering that is prohibited."

Meanwhile, the province is continuing to call on the federal government to assist with getting Ontario more vaccines.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he signed an agreement with Pfizer on Friday to secure an additional eight million doses of the vaccine.

Four million Pfizer-BioNTech shots are expected to arrive in May, and two million more will arrive in both June and July. The deal comes as Moderna revealed upcoming vaccine shipments will be significantly less than originally planned.
