Police probe suspicious basement fire

A basement fire at an abandoned east London home has been deemed suspicious.

Firefighters were called to 256 Hamilton Road, east of Adelaide Street around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday after thick smoke was seen coming from the two-storey home.

"The first engine arrived to fire coming from the basement area and heavy smoke coming from the rest of the home," said Platoon Chief Gary Mosburger. "Fire crews entered to knock down that fire and search the rest of the premise."

No one was found inside and no injuries were reported.

A section of Hamilton Road was closed while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. It was reopened after roughly two hours.

Damage is estimated at $100,000 with the worst of it in the basement, said Mosburger.

The fire has been determined to be suspicious in nature, according to London police.

Officers with the street crime unit and fire prevention investigators were back on scene Wednesday morning trying to pinpoint the cause.

Anyone with information about the blaze is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
