While residents of southwestern Ontario have enjoyed sunshine and above seasonal temperatures for the past week, it does not mean it's warm enough to hit area waterways.
OPP received several reports over the weekend of people paddle boarding and surfing in the waters of Lake Erie and Lake Huron. That has prompted police to issue a warning about the frigid waters.
"You should know the water temperature in Lake Erie and Lake Huron in West Region is just 2.7 degrees! Those are dangerous temperatures if you run into trouble," West Region OPP said in a tweet on Sunday.
Anyone who becomes stranded in the water at that temperature would run the risk of getting hypothermia, which occurs as body temperature falls below 35 C.
