Increase of 126 COVID-19 cases in London-area, zero deaths

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported 126 new cases of COVID-19 in the region on Sunday.

This now marks the fifth straight day daily case numbers have been in the triple-digits.

However, Sunday's numbers are down slightly from Saturday when the region saw 161 additional cases, which was the highest single-day case count in the region to date.

Since the pandemic began, a total of 8,394 cases have been reported in the London area. The health unit said there have been nine confirmed variant and 697 variant screened positive cases in the region.

Ninety-one additional recoveries were also reported on Sunday. So far, 6,995 individuals in the London area have recovered from the virus and the number of known active cases is currently at 1,209.

Meanwhile, 190 people have died from the virus in the region since the pandemic began.

The last death in London-Middlesex was reported over the Easter long weekend.

There were also no changes to the number of local outbreaks over the past 24 hours.

Outbreaks continue at the Parkwood Institute Mental Health Care building, daycare centre Kidorable, and at five area schools – St. Anne’s Catholic School, Holy Rosary Catholic, Northridge Public, Riverbend Academy, and Sir Fredrick Banting Secondary.

There also remain eight outbreaks at residences at Western University and its affiliates. The latest outbreak was confirmed Friday at a King’s University College student residence.

Across Ontario, the province recorded a record high of 4,456 new cases. According to Health Minister Christine Elliot, there were 1,353 new cases in Toronto, 860 in Peel and 444 in York Region.

Currently, 1,513 people in Ontario are hospitalized as a result of the virus.
