London-Middlesex logs 122 new COVID-19 cases, one additional death

Health officials in the London area are once again reporting 122 new cases of COVID-19.

The latest cases were reported on Saturday by the Middlesex-London Health Unit. On Friday, 122 cases were also recorded. 

Additionally, another person in the region died from the virus. The latest person to pass away was a man in his 80s who was not associated with a retirement or long-term care home. The death toll in London-Middlesex is now at 189.

There were also 37 new recoveries reported on Saturday in the region. With the new cases and new recoveries, the number of known active cases now sits at 732, up from 649 the previous day. London-Middlesex has seen a total of 7,423 cases since the pandemic began.

There was no change to the number of institutional outbreaks over the past 24 hours with the number remaining at three. The number of confirmed variants of concern also remained unchanged at eight.

There was however another outbreak declared at a Western University residence.

The latest residence impacted is Delaware Hall, marking the fifth active outbreak at the university. Outbreaks remain at Elgin Hall, Medway-Sydenham Hall, Ontario Hall and Saugeen-Maitland Hall.

The increase in cases has led the health unit to issue a notice for young adults in the region.

On its Twitter page, the health unit explained that over 50 per cent of all the new cases in the past two days were in people aged 18-22.

"If you are 18-22, it is critical that you cancel all parties, social gatherings, and hangouts," read one of the tweets. "Stay at home."

The next update from the Middlesex-London Health Unit will be provided on Tuesday.

Across Ontario, provincial health officials reported daily case counts not seen since mid-January.

According to Health Minister Christine Elliot, 3,009 new cases of the virus were reported in Ontario on Saturday and 3,089 cases on Friday. There were also 39 additional virus-related deaths logged across Ontario.

The province completed 121,400 tests over the past two days. As of Friday evening, 2.4-million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered across Ontario.
