London police form task force to deal with gun violence

Local police have formed a task force to address the rising number of gun violence seen in the city recently.

So far this year, London police have found 21 firearms during vehicle stops and daily investigations, another 18 guns have been seized during criminal investigations and 25 replica guns have been confiscated.

Police chief Steve Williams calls the number of gun-related incidents "deeply concerning."

"The number of gun seizures we have made so far this year is unprecedented. That is why I have commissioned a Task Force to immediately address this increased prevalence, and ultimately remove these weapons from our streets," Williams said.

In not quite four months, London has had seven reported shootings, or incidents of shots being fired, with the first incident being a drive-by shooting on New Year's Day. Most recently, an 18-year-old was found injured after being gunned down in northeast London on Wednesday.

Williams explained the priority of the task force is to ensure the safety of all Londoners.

"Gun crime and gun-related violence in our city require a dedicated focus. This Task Force will be comprised of investigators, crime analysts, and other specialists singularly focused on this issue. I want to reassure our community that we are taking this matter seriously."
