Officials confirm second death at EMDC in three days

Provincial officials have confirmed a second death at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre in three days.

A spokesperson with the Ministry of the Solicitor General confirmed that paramedics were called to the jail early Wednesday morning after an inmate was found in medical distress in his cell.

The inmate was later pronounced dead in hospital. This death marks the second at the jail in 72 hours and the 18th since 2009.

On Sunday, emergency crews arrived to tend to another inmate who was suffering a medical emergency. Officials say he died in hospital on Monday night.

Other details, including the inmate’s name, age or suspected cause of death; haven't been released by investigators.

Officials say the Office of the Chief Coroner will be investigating the matter and if the death was from anything other than natural causes, an inquest will be called.

The deaths do not appear to be related.
