Death of inmate reported at EMDC

Another inmate at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre has died.

The Ministry of the Solicitor General says paramedics arrived at the jail to take an inmate to hospital after he was found in medical distress on Sunday.

Officials say the inmate died in hospital Tuesday morning.

No other details, including the inmate's name, age or suspected cause of death have been released.

"When a death involving an inmate occurs, it is the subject of multiple investigations. The Office of the Chief Coroner conducts a death investigation to determine cause and manner of death. The ministry conducts an internal investigation to determine whether all ministry policies and procedures were followed with respect to the care and custody of the deceased," Ministry Spokesperson Andrew Morrison said in a statement to Blackburn News.

This marks the jail's 17th death in just over 10 years. The correctional facility last reported an inmate death in late November of 2020.

The ministry adds if the coroner determines the death was from anything other than natural causes, an inquest will be called, otherwise inquests are made at the discretion of the chief coroner.
