COVID-19 closes second Woodstock school

A COVID-19 outbreak has resulted in the closure of another school in Woodstock.

Due to eight confirmed COVID-19 cases affecting both staff and students across multiple classrooms, the London District Catholic School Board (LDCSB) announced on Saturday that it will be temporarily closing St. Patrick's Catholic Elementary School.

According to a statement from the school board, some of the cases are a variant of concern.

"With roughly two-thirds of the school’s 350-plus students and staff self-isolating, as well as the ongoing teacher and educational assistant shortage, the school board was forced to make this difficult decision due to health and well-being as well as operational concerns," said Communications and Faith Liaison Officer Mark Adkinson in an emailed statement.

St. Patrick's will be closed until at least March 28. During the temporary closure, students will continue their learning remotely.

According to the board, it is anticipated that in-person classes will resume for many students on March 29. Other staff and students will return to the school once their period of self-isolation is over if it extends beyond March 29.

"Southwestern Public Health is investigating the cases and is providing advice and support to the LDCSB and the school community in navigating the situations," read the statement.

On March 11, the LDCSB closed St. Michael’s Catholic Elementary School after several staff members likely had, or tested positive for the virus. According to the school board's website, there are five active cases at St. Micheals.

St. Micheals is expected to reopen on March 25.
