Fanshawe music industry students curate 'Quaran-tune' playlist

To mark one year of COVID-19 lockdowns, Fanshawe College's Music Industry Arts (MIA) program has released a quarantine inspired playlist comprised of songs written and performed by current students and alumni.

The "Quaran-tune" playlist was released on Wednesday, exactly one year after Ontario declared a state of emergency due to the pandemic. Fanshawe says the playlist was developed with the goal of creating something students, staff and the community could enjoy, to support the students and alumni whose musical endeavours were interrupted by COVID and to mark the one year anniversary of the pandemic in a positive way.

"The pandemic has impacted everyone, the music industry has been hit particularly hard, and live music was hit the hardest," said Dan Brodbeck, MIA program coordinator.

As events were cancelled last year and plans changed, local artists had to make the most out of the situation by focusing on self-improvement and seizing opportunities where they came. Brodbeck explained many grads were able to release new material. He added that despite the obvious down-sides of the last year that he, other professors and students from past to present banded together to make the most of it.

"I have worked with many grads as peers after they graduate. To be there when they enter the program, teach them, then help them start their careers feels great." Brodbeck said. On top of heading the MIA program, Brodbeck is also a Grammy-nominated and JUNO-winning producer, with credits on records for the Irish rock-band The Cranberries, and the band's lead singer, Dolores O'Riordan.

The playlist which features over 50 songs from 28 artists debuts on the heels of seven Fanshawe alumni being nominated, or involved with projects nominated, for nine 2021 JUNO awards.
