Multiple crashes as icy weather moves across region

A messy mix of snow, ice pellets, and freezing drizzle made for a slippery morning out on London-area roads on Tuesday.

Provincial police were called to multiple collisions along Highway 401 between Wonderland and Dorchester roads.

Vehicles began sliding into ditches around 6 a.m. as a band of snowy, icy weather moved through the region. The layer of ice left behind sent a vehicle skidding off the 401 off-ramp at Wonderland Road and from the eastbound lanes near Union Road.

By 7 a.m., the right westbound lane of the highway was blocked after a transport truck collided with a vehicle.

Other collisions were reported throughout the morning near Dorchester Road, Putnam Road, and Culloden Road.

OPP urged drivers to slow down and move over for tow truck operators working to remove the wrecks from the highway.

None of the collisions resulted in serious injury.

Roads will be better for the drive home as the temperature rises to 6 C, melting the snow and ice. There is a slight chance more freezing drizzle could pass through the area late Tuesday night and overnight.
