University Hospital declares COVID outbreak

The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) says one of its hospitals is grappling with another COVID-19 outbreak.

On Friday, the outbreak was announced on the University Hospital's fourth-floor medicine unit. According to the LHSC's website, fewer than five patients have tested positive, and currently, no staff have fallen ill. As of March 12, the hospital says it is caring for seven in-patients with COVID-19, with less than five in the intensive care unit.

"Unit-level outbreaks for COVID-19 are declared, in partnership with the Middlesex-London Health Unit, as soon as there are two or more confirmed positive cases among patients or staff that could have possibly been acquired on an inpatient unit," LHSC said in a statement.

It has been over a month since an outbreak has been reported at either hospital. University Hospital resolved its last outbreak on February 4, while Victoria Hospital has remained outbreak-free since January 23.

LHSC said the emergency departments at both hospitals remain open and has assured that they are safe for care.
