Salih, Helmer won't seek re-election

Two incumbent city councillors won't run for re-election when their current term comes to an end next year in order to make room for more diversity on council. Mo Salih and Jesse Helmer, who have represented Wards 3 and 4 on city council since 2014, announced on Wednesday they won't seek third terms.

"Making space for new voices and diverse perspectives is how we renew the progressive movement," the pair said in a statement. "We know we need more women, including women of colour, making the decisions at City Hall. London should have a council as diverse as our city."

Salih noted that 50 per cent of London's population is female and yet only men have ever represented his and Helmer's two wards. Of the city's 14 wards, only four are currently held by women and only one is held by a woman of colour.

"It's always a positive thing to recognize that diversity is only going to make our city better," said Salih. "It's important to set the stage and set the example for others, so I think having the opportunity to advocate over these many years has been a positive [for me], but I think it's important to bring new fresh ideas that will allow others to have an opportunity to serve."

Both councillors earned praise from Mayor Ed Holder, who said he was initially disappointed to hear they were not running again, but that when he learned why, his disappointment turned to support.

"Councillor Salih has remained a dedicated advocate for his constituents in Ward 3 over his two terms on Council. He has been a voice for all Londoners, including many who have too often gone unnoticed or unheard. Mo has helped to spearhead changes that have improved the lives of Londoners, from all backgrounds, and will for years to come," Holder said in a statement released Wednesday. "Councillor Helmer has been a great source of wisdom and support to Council, and to myself personally – especially during his time as Deputy Mayor. Jesse is a model for anyone who seeks to serve the public as an elected representative, and is the rare sort who leads with his head as well as his heart."

In the meantime, Salih and Helmer stressed they will continue to push for "progress and a fairer, more just city for everyone" until their term officially comes to an end.

The next municipal election is slated for Oct. 24, 2022.
