Flying tribute to essential workers planned in St. Thomas

It will be a parade like no other in St. Thomas this April.

St. Thomas Airfest is organizing an "air parade" to honour essential workers who have been on the frontlines throughout the pandemic. Unlike a traditional parade that sees floats move through the streets, the air parade will see aircraft take to the sky above the city.

"We recognize everyone has had to make sacrifices over the past year, and this event is our small part of giving back and saying 'thank you,'" St. Thomas Airfest said in a statement.

The parade is intended to be viewed from the comfort of your own yard with no additional festivities being setup at the airport.

Details on what aircraft will be participating in the April 10 parade dubbed 'AirFest Salute to All Essential Workers’ will be announced in the coming weeks.

As for Airfest 2021 itself, organizers said out of an abundance of caution they have made the difficult decision to postpone it for another year. The aviation spectacle had been slated to run June 25 to 27 of this year. It will now return to the sky on June 24 to 26 of next year.

Tickets already purchased for the 2021 event will be honoured at the 2022 show.

Airshow London said in December it would resurrect its drive-in format at the London International Airport in 2021. To date, it is the only airshow in Canada to fly during the pandemic with a physically distanced format. More than 2,500 vehicles parked on the airport grounds for last year's show.
