Middlesex London reports 10 new COVID-19 cases

For the second straight day, the London region recorded a double-digit increase in new COVID-19 cases.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported ten new infections on Wednesday. That is down from 20 the previous day and up from five on Monday. Since the start of the pandemic, the area has had a total of 6,126 cases of the virus.

It has now been 11 days since a COVID-19 related death was recorded in London or Middlesex County. That leaves the death toll unchanged at 181.

There are ongoing outbreaks at five seniors facilities and none at any of London's hospitals. That London Health Sciences Centre currently has 10 inpatients with COVID-19, with fewer than five in intensive care.

Outbreaks at two local schools - Clara Brenton public and Caradoc North public - have been declared over. That leaves just one school outbreak at St. Anne’s Catholic and one preschool outbreak at Pinetree Montessori School.

Fourteen more people recovered from the virus increasing the overall number of resolved cases to 5,844. There are 101 known active cases in the region.

It was another zero new case day in Elgin and Oxford counties on Wednesday. Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for the two, said with no new infections the total case count remains at 2,463. The death toll is also unchanged at 67 with no additional deaths reported since the weekend. Caressant Care Retirement Home in Woodstock, Valleyview Nursing Home in St. Thomas, and Aylmer Retirement Residence continue to deal with outbreaks. The health unit said the total number of resolved cases in the counties is 2,368, leaving 28 known active cases.

Provincially, the number of new cases rose back above 1,000 following a single day drop.

Public health officials logged 1,054 new infections across the province Wednesday, up from 975 the previous day. Prior to Tuesday, the province's daily case numbers were over 1,000 for five consecutive days.

Regions with the most new cases Wednesday were Toronto with 363, Peel with 186, and York Region with 94.

According to the province’s daily epidemiologic summary, there were five more confirmed cases of the U.K. variant, known as B.1.1.7 to bring the total to 395. The number of lab confirmed cases of the South African variant, known as B.1.351 and the Brazil variant, P.1. are unchanged at nine and one.

The province’s total case count since the start of the pandemic now sits at 296,173.

Nine deaths were reported over the past 24 hours, to increase the province's death toll to 6,893.

At hospitals in Ontario, there are 675 patients with COVID-19. Of those, 287 are in intensive care and 182 are on ventilators.

The number of resolved cases rose to 279,230. There are currently 10,050 known active cases of the virus in Ontario.

In the last 24 hour period, 54,852 COVID-19 tests were processed. Ontario’s current positivity rate is 2.4 per cent.

The province has administered 602,848 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine since Tuesday night. More than 250,000 people in Ontario have received their second dose of the vaccine and are considered fully inoculated.
