Just 19 new COVID-19 cases reported in London-Middlesex

It's the lowest number of new COVID-19 cases in the London area in well over a month.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported just 19 new cases on Tuesday, a day after reporting 27.

"The last time we had a two day total this low was late November," tweeted London Mayor Ed Holder. "Your efforts matter, and your efforts are making a difference. Don’t stop now!"

Two deaths were also reported by the health unit. One was a man in his 90s who lived in a long term care facility, while the other was a man in his 60s who did not live in long term care. There have now been 172 COVID-19 deaths in the area since the start of the pandemic, 70 of which occurred this month alone.

The total case count for Middlesex London now stands at 5,488. Recoveries are up by 16 since Sunday to 3,747. That leaves 1,569 cases active.

Outbreaks of the virus remain at eight local long-term care and retirement homes.

An outbreak declared January 15 at the Emergency Department of University Hospital is still in effect. The London Health Sciences Centre says it is currently treating 19 patients with COVID-19, of which five are in intensive care. The number of staff who have currently tested positive for COVID-19 is 16.

An outbreak also continues at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital.

Southwestern Public Health reported another COVID-19 death and 13 new cases on Tuesday. The health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties said the latest numbers bring its death toll to 55 and total case count to 2,234. Maple Manor, a Tillsonburg long-term care home remains the hardest hit by COVID-19 in the region. There are 85 residents and 52 staff members at the home infected with the virus. Twenty deaths have been linked to the outbreak.. Resolves cases in the region have increased to 1,949, leaving 230 cases active.

Provincially, the number of new COVID-19 cases slid under 2,000 again on Tuesday.

There were 1,740 infections logged across the province, bringing Ontario's total since the start of the pandemic to 258,700.

Sixty-three deaths were reported over the past 24 hours, bringing the provincial death toll to 5,909

At hospitals in Ontario, there are 1,466 patients with COVID-19. Of those, 383 are in intensive care and 298 are on ventilators.

The number of resolved cases rose to 229,755.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said Tuesday that, as off 8 p.m. Monday, 295,817 vaccine doses had been administered in Ontario.
