Ontario's civilian police oversight agency has determined there are no grounds on which to charge any London police officer after a man jumped from a balcony and suffered serious injuries.
The Special Investigations Unit was called to London on September 24, 2020 after the incident on King Street near Lyle Street. It was around 11:20 a.m. that day when police were called to an apartment building on King Street. A 21-year-old man had called 9-1-1 to report that a 22-year-old was in his apartment and he didn't want him there.
Officers went to the 8th floor apartment and spoke to both men. They then took the 22-year-old to the hallway to arrest him for breaching conditions of his release. As that was going on, the 21-year-old jumped from the balcony to a 4th floor ledge.
He was taken to hospital with pelvic fractures.
SIU Director Joseph Martino has determined there are no reasonable grounds to believe that the any officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s injuries.
"The police officers were not present when the Complainant decided to jump from his balcony, nor were they neglectful in failing to take measures to prevent the Complainant from attempting to harm himself," Martino said. "For the foregoing reasons, there is no basis for proceeding with criminal charges in this case, and the file is closed."
