63 new COVID-19 cases, one death in London-Middlesex

Another 63 cases of COVID-19 were reported Thursday by the Middlesex London Health Unit.

The health unit also reported one death. A man in his 80s who lived in a long term care facility is the 161st person to die of COVID-19 in London and Middlesex County since the pandemic began. Fifty-nine of those deaths have occurred this month.

The total number of cases in the city and county since the pandemic began is 5,296.

The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) has 22 inpatients with COVID-19, with ten of them listed in intensive care. There are 22 staff members who have recently tested positive for the virus. Outbreaks remain on three units within the LHSC – two at Victoria Hospital and one at University Hospital. Fewer than five staff and fewer than five patients have contracted the virus on the two affected units at Victoria Hospital. Eight employees and zero patients have been infected in the University Hospital outbreak. There are no deaths linked to the three outbreaks.

There are 14 area long-term care or retirement facilities with COVID-19 outbreaks.

Recoveries are up by 35 to 3,594, leaving 1,541 active cases in Middlesex London.

Southwestern Public Health, which covers Elgin and Oxford counties, had 23 new cases on Thursday. The total case count is now 2,136. There was one additional death in the region, increasing the death toll to 49. The number of resolved cases rose to 1,816. Currently, there are 271 active cases.

Provincially, 2,632 COVID-19 infections were recorded Wednesday bringing Ontario’s total number of cases since the pandemic began to 247,564.

The number of people in hospital across the province suffering from the virus remains high. As of Thursday, 1,533 Ontarians are being treated in hospital. Of those, 388 are in intensive care and 293 are on ventilators. All of those numbers are down from Wednesday.

Forty-six additional deaths were recorded over the past 24 hours. Ontario’s death toll is now 5,614.

The number of resolved cases rose to 215,887.

According to Health Minister Christine Elliott, as of Wednesday night, 253,817 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Ontario.
