London launches second temporary overnight winter shelter

London has opened a second, temporary overnight shelter that will provide some much needed support for the city's most vulnerable this winter.

As part of London's winter response program, the new site at 415 York Street includes retrofitted portable buildings with daytime and overnight resting spaces for up to 30 people.

According to the city, those staying at the space will receive three meals a day and have access to washroom and shower facilities. The location will be staffed by outreach agencies and community partners, along with around the clock security.

"All Provincial and public health guidelines, including physical distancing measures and COVID-19 screening protocols are in place to ensure the health and safety of staff and individuals using the spaces," a city release said.

Last month, the program introduced the first temporary shelter located at 652 Elizabeth Street. Elsewhere, a daytime drop-in space located at 525 Hamilton Road is providing beverages, meals and snacks.

The initiative is expected to open another daytime resting space in the downtown core within the next few weeks.
