London Transit scraps free New Year's Eve bus rides

There will be no free bus rides in London on New Year's Eve.

The London Transit Commission (LTC) has announced it is cancelling its annual complimentary December 31 service as a way of discouraging revellers looking to ring in the new year despite the provincewide COVID-19 lockdown.

"Parties and gatherings is not an appropriate thing to encourage. Instead, regular LTC service will run on the last night of the year for those who need to take public transit for essential reasons," London Transit said in a statement.

It will be the first time in 35 years the LTC has not provided the "Ride the Bus on Us" service.

"We hope everyone safely celebrates the end of 2020 by NOT gathering," the LTC statement concluded.

The southern region of Ontario enters a 28-day lockdown at 12:01 a.m. on December 26.
