Grocery store theft leads to armed robbery charge

A London man is charged after police allege he pulled a replica gun on a person trying to stop him from stealing.

Police were called to the Loblaw's grocery store on Wonderland Road at Southdale Road around 11:45 a.m. Monday. According to police, a man was pushing a shopping cart in the store when a loss prevention officer spotted him concealing items. The man allegedly left the store without paying for the items.

"The loss prevention officer approached the man at which point the suspect allegedly pointed a gun in his direction," police said in a news release issued Tuesday. "The suspect fled westbound with the stolen merchandise, and police were notified."

An arrest was made around 12:10 p.m.

A 32-year-old London man is charged with armed robbery. He is to appear in court in February.
