A possible salmonella contamination has prompted a recall of Fresh Attitude brand baby spinach.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced the recall Friday by Vegpro International. The company has recalled 312-gram and 142-gram packages of baby spinach, with best before dates of December 4 and 5. The products with UPC codes 8 88048 00028 8 and 8 88048 00004 2 were sold in Ontario and Quebec.
Anyone with the spinach in their refrigerator is being told not to eat it and should either toss it into the garbage or return it to the store where it was purchased.
Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick, according to the CFIA. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
So far, there have been no reported illnesses linked to the recalled spinach.
The CFIA is now conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.
